How to play a new Steam game cheaply: legal ways

How to play a new Steam release cheaply and legally: demos and Next Fest, the 2-hour refund window, wishlists and SteamDB, Steam Families, PC Game Pass, key stores and account rental.

How do you play a new Steam game cheaply and still stay legal? A big new release costs 1,400–2,000 ₴ on the Ukrainian Steam store, and not everyone wants to pay that for 20–40 hours of story. Below are the options from free to paid, the conditions worth knowing in advance, and where each option falls short.

Free: try before you buy

Demos. Some games have a separate demo — its own Steam page, usually a small slice of the game. The "Download demo" button sits on the game's page next to the purchase button. For a new release it is the cheapest way to find out whether you like it and whether your PC can run it.

Steam Next Fest. A few times a year Valve runs a week of demos for upcoming games. The October 2026 festival runs from 19 to 26 October: you can play demos, watch developer streams and wishlist what catches your eye. Games that are already out are not part of it — these are titles still heading for release.

Free weekends. Now and then a paid game opens up in full to everyone for a few days. When the event ends, access goes away, and the game is usually discounted at the same time. Valve has to approve these, so they are rare and not available for every game.

Epic Games Store giveaways. Epic gives away one or two games to keep every week, and the giveaways are still running in October 2026. Fresh releases almost never show up there, but it is an option for an evening's play.

Buy, with a safety net: refunds

Steam refunds a game if less than 14 days have passed since purchase and you have played under 2 hours. A pre-purchase can be refunded any time before release; after release, the 14 days count from the launch date.

Two hours is not a way to finish a game for free. Valve says plainly that refunds exist to take the risk out of buying, and it may stop refunding people who abuse them. It is, however, enough to check performance on your own PC and get a first impression.

A useful detail: if you buy a game and it goes on sale a few days later, Valve does not treat refunding it and buying it again at the lower price as abuse — within the same 14-day, 2-hour limits.

Wait for a discount, but wisely

Wishlist. Add the game to your wishlist and turn on the wishlist discount option in your email preferences. According to the Steamworks documentation, the email goes out when the discount is at least 20%; smaller discounts do not trigger it.

SteamDB. On steamdb.info, each game's page shows its price history and the lowest price it has ever sold for. You can see whether today's "sale" is actually good or the game has been cheaper before.

Big sales. The next one is the Steam Winter Sale, which runs from 17 December 2026 to 4 January 2027 according to Valve's calendar. An autumn release may or may not be discounted at its first sale — there is no way to predict it, so go by the price history on SteamDB.

Steam Families. Up to six accounts in one household share a library. If a family member has already bought the new game, you play it for free. The limits: one copy can only be played by one person at a time, developers can exclude specific games from family sharing, and after leaving a family you have to wait a year before joining another.

Remote Play Together. For games with local co-op (same screen), a second copy is not required: the person inviting owns the game, and friends join over the internet. It does not cover full online multiplayer.

PC Game Pass. Microsoft's PC subscription has a library of games; according to ITC.ua, it costs 230 ₴ a month in Ukraine since April 2026. In Ukraine only PC Game Pass is officially available, not Ultimate. Microsoft's own games arrive in the subscription on launch day, except new Call of Duty titles, which since April 2026 are added about a year later. If the release you want is not in the catalogue, this option does not help. And once you cancel, access to the games ends.

Key stores. Humble Bundle, Fanatical and Green Man Gaming sell Steam keys and run their own discounts. Humble Choice is a monthly bundle of games for $14.99. It matters to tell stores apart from marketplaces where private sellers resell keys: such a key can be revoked if it was originally bought with a stolen card, leaving you with neither the game nor your money.

Account rental. If you want to finish a new game once and move on, you can rent a Steam account that has it: in our catalogue most Steam games cost 70 ₴ for a month or 140 ₴ for three months. The game does not become yours, you play in Steam's offline mode, so online modes and internet co-op are unavailable. The Steam Subscriber Agreement does not allow handing an account to others, so this works outside Steam's rules; the risk of a ban is on the account owner, and your own account is not involved. Some new releases use Denuvo, which needs an internet connection on first launch. How it all works is covered in "Steam account rental: how it works, is it safe, how much it costs" and "How to play in Steam offline mode". To fit within the rental period, see games you can actually finish in a month.
