Renting PC games vs buying: what is cheaper in 2026

Renting PC games or buying them — which is cheaper in 2026? The answer depends less on the game and more on how you play it: finish the story and move on, come back for years, or play online with friends. Below are October 2026 prices in hryvnias (₴, the Ukrainian Steam region) and simple maths for each case.

What a new release costs on Steam right now

Steam sells games in Ukraine in hryvnias, and big releases from the last two years sit at roughly 1,400–2,000 ₴. Examples from the Ukrainian Steam store as of 13 October 2026:

Four legal options and what they cost

There is also Steam Families: up to six accounts in one household sharing a library. It is free, but only if someone close to you already owns the game, and two people cannot run the same copy at once. After leaving a family you have to wait a year before joining another.

The maths: when each option wins

Finish one story game in a month or two. Renting costs 70 ₴ for a month or 140 ₴ for three. Buying Resident Evil Requiem costs 1,999 ₴ — the same as roughly 28 months of rental. If you play a game once and do not come back, renting is many times cheaper. Check how long the game takes first: we put together a list of games you can actually finish in a month.

Play several games in a row. Three different new releases, a month each, cost 210 ₴ by renting. Buying the same three is around 5,000–6,000 ₴. Three months of PC Game Pass is about 690 ₴, but only if all three games are in the subscription.

Play for years. If you will keep coming back — new DLC, repeat playthroughs, mods — buying makes sense. Ideally during a sale: the next big one, the Steam Winter Sale, runs from 17 December 2026 to 4 January 2027 according to Valve's calendar.

Play online with friends. Renting does not fit here: on a rented account we ask you to play in Steam Offline Mode, and online modes and internet co-op do not work there. For multiplayer, buy the game or use Game Pass if it is included.

Check whether the game runs on your PC. Steam refunds purchases within 14 days if you have played less than two hours. That is enough to test performance, not to finish the game.

Other free ways to try games

Steam Next Fest — a week of demos for upcoming games. According to Valve's calendar, the October festival runs from 19 to 26 October 2026.
Epic Games Store giveaways — Epic lets you claim one or two games for free every week to keep. They are rarely new releases, but the library adds up over a year.
Demos and free weekends on Steam — some games have demos or open up for free for a few days from time to time.

What to know about renting

Renting is access to someone else's Steam account for a set period, not a purchase. The game does not become yours, achievements and cloud saves stay on that account, and online modes are unavailable. The Steam Subscriber Agreement does not allow sharing an account with others, so this works outside Steam's rules; the ban risk sits with the account owner, and your own account is not involved.
