Steam account rental: how it works, is it safe, how much it costs
October 10, 2026 · 6 min read
What renting a Steam account means, how you get access and play offline, the real risks, and how the price compares with buying the game, Game Pass and Steam Families.
Renting a Steam account means getting access to someone else's account that already owns the game you want. You receive a login and password, sign in to Steam, switch to Offline Mode and play without buying the game. Below we explain how it works, what can actually go wrong, and whether it pays off compared with buying.
How it works
- Pick a game and a term. With us, Steam games are rented by the month.
- Pay by bank transfer and put the order code in the transfer comment. That code is how the payment finds your order, and access opens automatically.
- Get the login and password on your rental page. If Steam asks for a confirmation code (Steam Guard), the same page has a "Get code" button. Press it only after you have entered the login and password and seen the code prompt: the code email is generated only after a sign-in attempt.
- Download the game. You rent the account, not the files: the game has to be downloaded to your PC, and that is tens of gigabytes.
- Launch the game once online, then go offline. After that the game needs no internet.
Why is offline mandatory? Steam does not let one account play on two devices at the same time. Several people signing in online kick each other out, while in Offline Mode Steam does not check in with the network. That is why one account can serve several renters, and why a rental costs a fraction of the game's price. Step-by-step instructions and common errors are in our Steam Offline Mode guide.
What does not work in a rental
- Online multiplayer and online co-op. Offline Mode has no network features, so rent games with a single-player campaign.
- Always-online games. If a game needs a constant connection to the publisher's servers, it will not start offline.
- Updates. New patches are not downloaded offline. If a game demands an update, contact support instead of going online yourself: a parallel sign-in can kick another player out.
- Cloud saves. Progress is stored on the account, and through Steam Cloud the next renter may overwrite it. Copy anything important from the game's save folder before the rental ends.
Is it safe
Let us be honest first: Steam's rules do not allow account rental. The Steam Subscriber Agreement (section 1.C) says the account is for personal use, may not be sold, transferred or charged for, and the login and password may not be shared without Valve's permission. Sections 4 and 9 give Valve the right to restrict or close an account for breaching the agreement, and Valve is not required to warn first.
What this means for you as a renter:
- Your own Steam account is not at risk. You play on our account and never enter yours anywhere. We found no official Valve statements about mass bans of rented accounts specifically, but the risk of a block exists, and it falls on the account owner.
- An account can stop working mid-rental, for example if the seller revokes it. In that case we issue another account with the same game for the remaining time.
- Do not link anything of your own to a rented account: card, email, phone. When the rental ends your access closes, but those links stay in someone else's hands.
- Do not change the password or email. It breaks access for other renters and counts as an attempt to take the account: the rental ends without a refund.
- No cheats. A VAC ban is issued to the account that was used with cheats and affects everyone who uses it.
- Denuvo protection. Some games with Denuvo limit how many different PCs can launch them per day. We did not find an official figure from the protection's developer; users and cloud gaming services cite around five computers per 24 hours, and the limit may differ between games. If a game reports an activation limit, write to us.
How much it costs
On gamerent.com.ua, renting any Steam game from the catalog costs 70 UAH per month or 140 UAH for three months (prices as of October 2026; the current one is on each game's page). For comparison:
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Buying a new release on Steam | e.g. Resident Evil Requiem — 1,999 UAH, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II — 1,599 UAH (Ukrainian Steam prices on 10 Oct 2026, no discount) | the game forever on your account, online, updates |
| PC Game Pass | 230 UAH per month since April 2026, according to dev.ua | a library of Microsoft and partner games, but not every Steam release |
| Steam account rental | 70 UAH per month per game | one game for a month, offline only, no online modes |
Then there is Steam Families, the official way to share a library that Valve launched in 2024. It is a "family" of up to six accounts in one household, and after leaving, a slot can only be filled again after a year. So it works if someone close to you already owns the game, not as a way to play a new release for a few hryvnias.
Steam also refunds a game within 14 days of purchase if you played less than two hours. That is enough to check whether the game runs on your PC, but not to finish it.
Who rental suits, and who it does not
It suits you if you want to finish a single-player game in a month or two and do not plan to come back to it: story-driven action games, horror, RPGs. It is worth checking which games you can really finish in a month.
It does not suit you if you need online play with friends, want to play for years, or care about the game being on your own account with achievements and cloud saves. Then it is better to wait for a sale and buy.
