Silent Hill: Townfall beginner guide — saving, combat, difficulty, how long to beat

How to survive the first hours of Silent Hill: Townfall: saving by phone, stealth and combat, difficulty settings, puzzles, PC performance, no Ukrainian — and whether you can finish it within a one-month rental.

Silent Hill: Townfall is a first-person survival horror set in the foggy island town of St. Amelia in 1996. It is the first mainline entry in the series shown entirely through the hero's eyes. It is developed by Screen Burn and published by Konami and Annapurna Interactive; the PC version came out in late September 2026.

The game punishes haste: enemies are usually avoided rather than fought, and saving works differently from most games. Here is what to know before launch and during the first hours.

How long does it take to beat

I could not get HowLongToBeat data, so these are outlets' estimates.

PlaystyleHours (outlet estimates)
Story only10–16
Careful run with exploration15–20
All endings25–30 and up

Outlets report five endings, two of which unlock in New Game+. If you avoid looking up puzzle solutions, a full completion can stretch to 40–50 hours.

Saving: only by phone

You cannot save from the pause menu. According to guides, you need to reach a phone and dial 100. There is also autosave, but don't rely on it: reviewers note that some threats kill very fast.

  • Save manually before every dangerous room.
  • Don't quit without seeing the save confirmation.
  • Saves sync through Steam Cloud, but on a rented account that is a convenience, not a guarantee.

Difficulty: combat and puzzles separately

Combat and puzzle difficulty are set independently and can be changed at any time without a restart. Outlets suggest Normal for a first run. Avoid Nightmare: enemies there notice even your flashlight beam in the dark.

Puzzle modes change only how many hints you get, not the solutions. With hints on, important items and documents are highlighted in red.

Combat and stealth: avoid fights

  • Simon is fragile. He takes damage quickly and weapons wear out fast; wooden ones break in a few hits, so save them for enemies you cannot avoid.
  • Defense first. Block, then strike when the enemy is open. Blocking saves health but also wears your weapon.
  • Noise draws enemies: gunshots, doors, heavy footsteps. Distract them with bricks and bottles.
  • Lean lets you peek around corners, but leaning too long gives you away. Crouch first.
  • Hiding fails if the enemy saw where you went. If spotted, retreat to a safer room.
  • The portable CRTV hints at nearby enemies: check it before a risky room.
  • Ammo and healing are scarce early on and get a little easier later. Don't waste bullets.

Puzzles

Write down numbers, symbols, names and odd notes: they turn out to be linked later. Puzzles are one of the game's strongest points in reviews, though critics call some of them frustrating.

What critics say

  • Scores: 81 on Metacritic and around 82 on OpenCritic; IGN and GameSpot each gave 8 out of 10. Steam reviews are "Mixed", about 68% positive.
  • Praised: atmosphere, the town as a location, the story, sound and puzzle design.
  • Criticized: mid- and late-game stealth sections where enemies repeat and are overtuned, hurting the pacing. The game also differs noticeably from earlier entries.

PC performance

The main reason for "Mixed" on Steam is stutter from shader compilation in Unreal Engine 5, especially in new areas early on. Patch 1.3.1 (30 September) expanded the precompiled shader set and reduced stutter, but whether it removed it entirely is unclear. There are also reports of crashes on Radeon cards with ray tracing; the workaround is to turn RT off.

Tip: launch the game on day one and let the first area warm up, rather than testing on your last day.

What to know before renting

  • No Ukrainian: no interface, subtitles or voice. Available: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Russian, Portuguese (Brazil), Chinese, Japanese and Korean; full voice-over only in English and Japanese.
  • The game is single-player only, so an offline rental loses no modes.
  • Denuvo: the Steam page doesn't list it, and I could not confirm reports of a Denuvo-free release from a reliable source. Either way, launch the game once online before switching Steam to offline mode (see how it works).
  • Age ratings: PEGI 16, ESRB M. The game is violent and disturbing.
